This recipe is going to be a little hard for me to write about because my husband was actually the one who made this but it was really good and, I’m told, not hard to make so just bear with me. The night before we were going to make this my daughter decided that she needed to get up every half hour starting at 1:30 am so when my husband and son got up at around 6 I went back to bed. By the time I got up he was almost done making this soup so that puts it at around 2 hours prep and cooking time. I asked him why it took longer than the recipe says it will ( I always find it takes longer than they say it will) and he said to peel and chop everything and to crisp the bacon takes a while, plus when you have a two year old that wants you to play that slows things down as well.
INGREDIENTS
- 1/2 pound sliced bacon, diced
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 celery ribs, sliced
- 1 pound dried green split peas
- 2 quarts water
- 2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
- 2 cups diced fully cooked ham
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 bay leaf
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
DIRECTIONS
- In a Dutch oven or soup kettle, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Using a slotted spoon, remove bacon to paper towels; drain, reserving drippings. Add onion and celery to drippings. Saute until vegetables are tender; drain. Add the peas, water, potatoes, ham, salt, bay leaf and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 45 minutes or until peas are very tender, stirring occasionally. Discard bay leaf.
- Cool slightly. Process in small batches in a blender until smooth. Return to Dutch oven; stir in cream. Heat through (do not boil). Garnish with reserved bacon.

Recipe Alterations
Because neither of us had ever made split pea soup before my husband stuck very close to the original recipe. He did tell me that the only thing he changed was that he added more salt and pepper than was the recipe called for.
Family Taste Test
We took this split pea soup out to my mother-in-laws house for supper and everyone except my son really enjoyed it. We served it with some store bought pan buns and it made a delicious, filling meal. I think the reason that my son did not eat it was simply because:
- We were at Grandmas house
- He had been too busy filling up on all the snacks that are usually available at Grandma’s houses
He did eat it for lunch the next day with hardly any complaints.
My Thoughts
To me this seems like it may be a bit of time consuming meal to make during the week, but a good occasional weekend treat (especially if I am not making it). Next time (and if I was cooking it) I would simmer the soup for longer than what the recipe called for as I found the peas to be a tiny bit hard still. This was a very tasty meal that I’m sure we will be making again especially now that it it getting cold.
