Thanks For Visiting Try New Meals.

I decided to try this one against my better judgment. Not because of anything in the recipe that I would have a problem with but my husband is not a fan of sausage by any means. I thought it looked good though and was something quite different from what we normally would have so I decided to make it anyway. I found it very easy to make and was impressed with how good it tasted.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 (19 ounce) package Bob EvansĀ® Italian Sausage
  • 4 ounces button mushrooms, diced
  • 3 cups cubed stuffing
  • 1 cup chicken broth or water
  • 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

DIRECTIONS

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. In nonstick skillet over medium heat, cook sausage and mushrooms until sausage is browned and mushrooms are tender. Set aside. In 9-inch square baking dish, combine stuffing and broth. Place sausage and mushrooms on top. Sprinkle with cheese. Cover and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until sausage is fully cooked.

Recipe Alterations

The minor alterations I made to this recipe include:

  1. Just because I did not read the recipe properly I sliced the mushrooms instead of dicing them.
  2. I thought that the amount of stuffing called for was too little for the amount of sausage this recipe required and so I increased how much I used.
  3. I increased the amount of broth I used
  4. I put it all in a 9 by 13 pan
  5. For some reason the grocery store I went to did not have monterey jack cheese so I had to settle for just monterey.

Family Taste Test

My husband ended up not minding this dish it was not his favourite meal but with a few changes to the recipe he would eat it again. Surprisingly my toddler ate all of the sausage on his plate and not much of anything else. Although with him that doesn’t mean much because with stuffing it is a hit or miss thing. Just depends what day you catch him on. I found that is was tasty especially for how simple a meal it is was to prepare. There is not a lot of things going on in this recipe but it still seems like a complete meal.

My Thoughts

My husband had some good suggestions for the next time I make this recipe. Instead of just placing the whole sausage on top of the stuffing I will remove the sausage from the casings and crumble it into a frying pan and fry it up with some pepper and diced onions. I would then mix the sausage right in with the stuffing along with some peas or some other vegetable to make in into more of a casserole type dish. I will also try to find monterey jack cheese as I think that would add more to the flavor of the entire dish. Even with what I would change in this recipe to make my whole family happy I personally still thought it was good as is without any changes.
